About Zeytinburnu Psychologist at Home
Deciding to seek psychological support is a step in itself; but sometimes the real difficulty after making that decision is leaving home and waiting your turn in a clinic's waiting room. The psychologist at home service lowers this threshold by bringing the session to the place you know best, your own home. Once the journey, Istanbul traffic and crowded places are out of the picture, you can put your energy directly into the conversation.
The comfort of talking in your own space
Talking from your own armchair, surrounded by familiar sounds and belongings, feels less tense for many people. There is no worry about running into someone you know in the waiting room, and no rush to get home while you are emotionally drained after a session. When the session ends, you can take the time you need to gather your thoughts in your own space.
The home itself also gives the psychologist valuable context. Especially in work with children and families, seeing how people interact in their natural environment can enrich the assessment. How this kind of observation will be carried out, including its limits, is discussed with you in advance.
For some people, however, home is where the issues they struggle with take place, and not every corner of it may feel equally comfortable. In that case, holding the session in another room of the house, or scheduling it for a time when fewer people are at home, can be considered together.
When is a home session the preferred option?
For people who find it hard to leave home because of limited mobility, a chronic illness or recovery after surgery, a home session is a practical solution. Older people trying to cope with loneliness, loss or major life changes may find it easier to accept support from the field of geriatric psychology in their own homes. New mothers, people who feel intense anxiety in crowded places and want to take the first step at home, and adults who don't feel comfortable in a clinical setting may also choose this option.
If your loved one receives our home care service, or if you carry the burden of care yourself, the caregiver's emotional needs should not be overlooked either. Family therapy creates room to address roles and communication within the household together. Which approach is suitable, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or EMDR, is decided together with the psychologist after the initial assessment.
What happens in a home session with a psychologist?
At the first meeting, the psychologist listens to you and tries to understand what led you to seek support, what you expect and what your daily life is like. This introduction is a starting point where the topics to work on together and the frequency of sessions are set. In later sessions, the work continues in line with the agreed goals through conversation, awareness exercises and, when needed, small tasks to try between sessions.
The psychologist comes to your home not as a guest but within a professional framework; you don't need to prepare refreshments or tidy the house specially. Starting and ending the session at a set time helps keep what is discussed within a safe structure. When you need to, you can also take a break or postpone a topic you are not ready to talk about that day.
Psychological support is a process that progresses at a different pace for each person; that is why it would not be right to promise a particular result or duration. Where they consider it necessary, the psychologist may refer you to a psychiatrist for medication or a medical assessment. If you are experiencing a sudden, serious crisis, such as thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, call 112 without waiting for your appointment.
How is what you share protected?
Confidentiality is the foundation of the therapeutic relationship. What you talk about in sessions is subject to the principle of professional confidentiality, and your health data is also protected under KVKK (Turkish Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698). The legal and ethical limits of confidentiality, for example how things will be handled if there is a risk to life, are explained to you clearly in the first session. You can read about our institutional safety principles on our quality and patient safety page.
To protect your privacy at home, we recommend holding the session in a room with a door that closes, where your conversation cannot be heard from other rooms. Putting your phone on silent and not scheduling anything else at that time helps the session run without interruption. Apart from family sessions, you and your psychologist decide together who will be in the room.
For those who want to support a loved one
If you want someone close to you to get psychological support, start by listening to how they feel rather than trying to persuade them. For the process to go well, it is important that the person makes the decision to start therapy themselves. After sessions, instead of asking “What did you talk about?”, it is enough to let them feel that you are ready to listen if they want to share.
Small arrangements, such as not entering the room during the home session with the psychologist, keeping young children busy with another activity and not waiting close enough to overhear the conversation, help your loved one feel safe. There may also be times when you feel exhausted from offering support; at such times, don't hesitate to schedule a session for yourself as well.
