Thin, deep or rolling veins can make the procedure harder both for you and for the person performing it. At home there is no one waiting in line, so the nurse does not rush; they take the time to warm the arm, try a suitable position and, when needed, use a fine-needle system such as a butterfly needle. If you have felt dizzy or faint when giving blood before, just mention it at the start; the procedure can also be done while you lie in your own bed.
With babies and children, familiar surroundings are half the battle. Little ones usually stay calmer in their own room, on their mother's or father's lap, distracted by a favorite toy. Explaining the procedure to your child beforehand in short, honest words works better than making promises you cannot keep, such as "it won't hurt at all".

- Do not skip your regular medications on your own; ask your doctor whether to take your morning dose before or after the blood draw.
- Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol the day before.
- Wear a loose top with sleeves that roll up easily, and make sure the room is not cold.
- Have the test request form or test list and your ID ready.
- Prepare a light breakfast in advance to eat once your fast is over.
If you take blood thinners or have had prolonged bruising after a blood draw before, be sure to tell the nurse. This allows the pressure time and the dressing after the procedure to be adjusted to you.
What happens during and after a blood draw at home?
The nurse first verifies your identity and the requested tests, then labels the tubes in front of you. All needles, tubes and cotton pads used are sterile and single-use. When the procedure is finished, the needle and other materials go into a medical waste container; none of them are left at your address.
After the procedure, keep the cotton pad pressed down for a few minutes and do not bend your arm; this is a simple way to reduce bruising. Try not to carry anything heavy with that arm for the rest of the day. A slight ache is normal; but if swelling grows or your hand feels numb, call us.
